60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot The 2021 Monkey Wrench Red Wine is a medium ruby in color with black cherry, strawberry, cold, and baking spice on the nose. Winemaker Notes
The 2021 Monkey Wrench combines the power of Red Mountain cabernet sauvignon with the elegance of Yakima Valley merlot. The fruit from Red Mountain offers intense layers of ripe fruit with an expansive and textured palate. Yakima Valley fruit provides lifted floral notes and delicate spice with broad flavors and a refined finish. Bud break and bloom in 2021 were earlier than normal. The weather was hot throughout much of the growing season. Like 2020, the 2021 vintage produced exceptionally low yields. Berries were remarkably small, and clusters were extremely light. This led to wines with amazing depth and intensity. The fruit was hand harvested between September 10th and October 16th, 2021. The wine was fermented in 1.5, 2 and 5-ton open top fermenters for 7-10 days. The wine is lightly pressed to barrel where it finishes primary and secondary fermentation and is aged for 21 months in 50% new French oak. The wine was racked three times and lightly fined prior to bottling.
